Quick, practical tips to keep your dog healthy, comfy, and looking great
PAW CARE
Clean regularly: Wipe paws after walks to remove dirt, allergens, or salt (especially in winter).
Nail trimming: Trim every 3–4 weeks. If nails click on the floor, they’re too long. Use dog nail clippers or a grinder—go slow and avoid the quick (pink area inside the nail).
Paw balm: Use a balm or paw wax 2–3x per week to protect and soothe dry or cracked pads.
DESENSITIZING PAW TOUCHING
- Many dogs are sensitive about their feet. Start early and go slow.
- Gently touch one paw at a time during calm moments (like after a walk or before bed).
- Pair each touch with a treat and praise. Gradually increase how long you hold or handle the paw.
- Practice touching between toes and tapping nails with a file or tool—always reward calm behavior.
COAT CARE
Brushing schedule:
- Short coats: 1–2x/week
- Medium/long coats: 3–4x/week to prevent mats
Choose the right tool: Use a slicker brush for longer coats, rubber curry brush for short-haired dogs, or a deshedding tool for heavy shedders.
Bathing: Once every 4–6 weeks unless your dog gets into something smelly. Use dog-safe shampoo (not human products).
Dry shampoo or waterless sprays: Great for in-between freshening. Follow directions on the label.
OTHER ESSENTIALS
Ears: Clean only the outer ear with a dog ear wipe or soft cloth. Avoid going deep.
Teeth: Brush 2–3x/week with dog-safe toothpaste or use dental chews.
Eyes: Wipe away tear stains or discharge with a damp, soft cloth.
Check regularly: Look for lumps, bumps, ticks, or signs of skin irritation during grooming.
MAKE GROOMING POSITIVE
Use treats, praise, and a calm tone.
Keep sessions short—10 to 15 minutes is plenty!
If your dog gets anxious, take a break and try again later.
